Job Description
About the Project
The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is a global conservation organisation dedicated to protecting biodiversity and wilderness areas through sustainable resource management, partnerships, and promoting environmental and social equity. In Zambia, we have been working in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) for nearly 40 years in North Luangwa National Park and, since 2017, in Nsumbu National Park through the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme (NTCP). NTCP focuses on resource protection, field operations, ecological monitoring, endangered species recovery, and community engagement in governance, livelihoods, and Human-Wildlife Coexistence. With Nsumbu National Park’s ecosystem on the path to recovery, key milestones include the return of lions in 2024 and a planned black rhino reintroduction. NTCP is exploring extension opportunities within the broader Nsumbu-Mweru ecosystem.
About The Position
The Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme (NTCP) is seeking a
Nurse
to support the health, safety, and well-being of rangers, staff, and their families. Reporting to the Resource Protection Manager, the Nurse will deliver primary healthcare services, promote preventative health practices, support the operational readiness of rangers, and ensure effective coordination with the national health system. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a healthy and operationally effective workforce in a remote conservation setting and will be a key contributor to shaping NTCP’s preventative health and wellness model. The position is based in Nsumbu National Park, Northern Province, Zambia.
Your Tasks
General Nursing & Primary Healthcare
Provide consultations, diagnosis, and treatment for staff and their families, promote health education and disease prevention, and support maternal, child, and female ranger health with a confidential and ethical approach.
Testing, Screening & Surveillance
Conduct routine screenings (malaria, HIV, TB, blood pressure, glucose), implement periodic health checks for rangers, support outbreak detection, and ensure appropriate follow-up of abnormal results.
Medicine & Medical Supply Management
Maintain inventory, ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications, monitor stock levels, and coordinate timely procurement in line with national and organisational regulations.
First Aid Training & Emergency Preparedness
Deliver general and advanced first aid training to rangers, team medics, and first aid instructors, run refresher courses and simulations, and ensure first aid kits are stocked and maintained.
Referrals & Continuity of Care
Identify cases requiring advanced care, facilitate referrals to government health facilities, maintain relationships with local clinics and hospitals, and track patient progress to ensure continuity of treatment.
Occupational Health & Ranger Readiness
Conduct fitness-for-duty assessments, monitor work-related injuries and illnesses, deliver pre- and post-operation health checks, support emergency medical response, and advise leadership on health-related operational risks.
Movement & Physiotherapy Support
Provide basic physiotherapy and rehabilitation, support injury recovery and return-to-work programmes, and educate staff on fitness, stretching, and injury prevention.
Data Management & Reporting
Maintain accurate patient records, manage health-related data confidentially, develop SOPs for medical records, and contribute to programme reporting and health indicator tracking.
Your Profile
Education & Licensing
Diploma or Degree in Nursing (Registered Nurse) with a valid practicing license.
Experience
Minimum three years of clinical experience, preferably in remote or rural settings, with experience in occupational health, emergency care, or public health considered an advantage.
Clinical Expertise
Strong understanding of primary healthcare, preventative medicine, diagnostics, and treatment of common illnesses and injuries.
Training & Capacity Building
Demonstrated ability to deliver first aid training, run refresher courses, and build the capacity of frontline staff.
Data & Reporting Skills
Experience managing health records, contributing to monitoring and evaluation plans, and producing reports and briefings.
Soft Skills
Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, high integrity and confidentiality, strong problem-solving abilities, and the resilience to work independently in a challenging remote environment.
We Offer
Contract
1-year renewable contract with a probation period.
Salary
Competitive and based on experience and qualifications.
Opportunity
A unique opportunity to contribute to wildlife conservation by supporting the health and wellbeing of a dedicated ranger force protecting Nsumbu National Park.
